Monster Cupcakes

The Borders book store by our house is going out of business.  Some of the already clearanced bargain books are a pretty good deal.  Otherwise, most books are about 60% off- of the retail price. If you dig around, you may find some gems.  (And they are clearancing their fixtures and bookshelves too.  Three bookshelves for $100!  And not some flimsy crappy bookshelf.  But real good, real wood ones!)

We found a book called What's New, Cupcake? for just $5!  Any book with the word cupcake in it is worth it. The ideas in it are so cute and so easy. They use easy candy (instead of fondant) for fancy decorations.

I decided to give one of the "ez" recipes a try.  They are these cute fur ball and string monster cupcakes.  I would totally show you what they are supposed to look like, but then that would make mine look foolish. So I'll let you use your imagination.

I mostly just need to practice piping the frosting. And since I wasn't making these for any special occasion, I didn't buy the peach rings it called for, or the M&M's. I call this the amateur look.

Either way, the kids loved them and thought they were adorable.  I do have a couple tips though. Make sure your frosting is cold. I thought having room temperature frosting would make it easier to pipe, but instead it just made it runny and not hold it's shape very well.

By the time I got to the last one, I decided to go for some different piping designs.

I actually have a few more unfrosted cupcakes left, so maybe tomorrow I will take my time and see if I can make some a little better.

Hope you are enjoying your Labor Day Weekend!!

Just a heads up... Rachel from Occasional Boredom is going to be hosting Working Mommy Wednesday from now on!  YAY!  It was time for me to pass the buck with all the other things on my plate.  And I'm so glad she took the reigns!  Make sure you go to her place on Wednesday for the info! Thanks Rachel!

Cupcakes! How I love 'em. We actually had a cupcake tree instead of a Cake Cake at our wedding this summer. Yours are super cute!

Look at you all Martha!!!
I don't think they sold all the hardware at the one near us ... that would have been an awesome book shelf experience for us - we are book hoarders ;)
