WMW: Sharing my money

Hump Day!  Love Wednesdays!  Cuz I get to connect with you all!  {And it's only 2 days away from Friday.}

Before I get to the questions for this week, I need your help with something.  I have the opportunity to work with Lisa Leonard, the amazing jewelry designer, to create a necklace.  A "working mommy" necklace, so to speak. I need two things from you....

#1. A design - should it say "working mom", "working mama", maybe "working mommy" with another tag that has a heart and a house on it (like "home is where the heart is" sorta concept).  Please look at her designs to get ideas!

#2. Would you buy one?  I can get a better deal if I {we} purchase 25 or more... that means I need 25 commitments and 25 pre-payments to make this work. (Sorry, can't put the money upfront myself... too much of a risk.)  If we can get 25, I will totally do this!

What do you think??  I've been in touch with Lisa and she's willing to work with us on a design, which is very cool!

----------------------------------------------------
Before my husband got laid off a few years back, we had two incomes coming in.  But we still had a joint checking account. Did he pay the car bill, the utilities and the groceries while I paid the mortgage and the medical stuff?  Nope.  In fact, we had our budget (yes, our budget) set up so that whatever a bill was for that month, we would each put in half.  Except for our school loans... we were responsible for those on our own!

Now, that he stays home with the kids for now, we still have a joint checking account.  Sure, we've had to adjust a few things and the money I make goes for everything, but I just don't see how having a separate account would work for us.

Some couples say that they would rather have it separate so that any money above and beyond bills is "theirs"... theirs to spend on their hobby, entertainment and whatever they want.  Maybe it doesn't work for us because we typically don't have a lot of extra money but I feel like we need to both know where our money is going.  If I'm spending way too much money on craft stuff {but I would never ever ever do anything like that}, I would hope that he would let me know!  As a family, a FAMILY, we need to make sure we are looking to the future together, planning our future together!

{off my soapbox now}
---------------------------------------------------

Please share your story with us... and remember to make it your own!  Please don't feel like it has to be a question and answer session... part of blogging is telling a story, your story.  Choose ONE of the prompts below or tell us anything working mom related.

#1. Birth stories!  {I loved giving birth and love hearing other birth stories... share one of yours!}

#2. Do you have your own bank account or do you share with your spouse?  (If you have your own, why?)

Then grab the button and LINK UP!!  (As always, visit the other links... that's what makes this meme fun!)

With the necklace, it depends on how it looks and the cost! I think a bracelet is something I would wear more of!!

I could have written this post, because we have the exact same mindset, I make most of the money but it goes to pay our shared bills. Too tired to elaborate like you did so I'll just say well said Julia! Thanks for speaking for me!!!

With the necklace, her designs are beautiful so I'm sure the end result would be something I might purchase but money's tight right now so it would be awhile. I'm still working on buying my childrens name necklaces from her!

I'd like to see the design and cost before committing, but I like the idea overall. Oh and I'm for Working Mommy or Mama.

And here's to Family accounts! We wouldn't have it any other way.

I like the idea of a necklace, but I would have to see a design and the price before I could commit!

I am with the other ladies...I love the idea of a necklace but I would need to see the price & design first. I am also much more likely to wear a bracelet than a necklace. I do love her designs and jewelry.

I didn't join in WMW today (went on a rant about something else instead!), but I like the idea of jewelry. Although I am with the pp who mentioned a bracelet instead. Would love to see a design for anything though!

We've had family accounts since day one! I wouldn't have it any other way. We even jointly paid off our student loans.

We've always had two accounts--one joint checking, one joint savings.
I will tell you that my Mother-in-law freaked me out shortly before we got married when she told me to be sure to have my own money set aside that I can access whenever I need it. (I was wondering if she was trying to tell me something about soon-to-be-husband!)
Anyway, she went on to tell me how, at the age of 23 (like me!), her first husband was killed in a terrible boating accident (3 others died, too; she was one of two who survived). Anyway, all of their joint accounts (which was everything) were locked down until the probate court settled weeks later. That meant she had to borrow money to buy groceries and pay rent--even replace the only pair of glasses she had!
Moral of her story: Everyone needs access to emergency funds.
Of course those were the days before credit cards and such. So all my cards are in my name only, so I have access to funds if necessary.

We each have our own accounts and a Joint Checking Account (not that he knows how to access it). He writes me a check from each paycheck and I pay all the bills (except his personal credit card and his student loan). I do this because he does not balance a checkbook, he relies on the online balance and atm balance to tell him what is in the account. Which often results in the account be over drafted (and the credit card charged!). I can't stand this and always have the account balanced down to the penny.
