all about me: my job

Sitting here, I realized that I've gotten a few new followers over the past few months.  And since my blog is about (ahem) working mommies, I figure I should share a little about my work.

Brief history:  I grew up in the midwest, graduated from college and immediately got a job out East at a University at the ripe old age of 21.  I worked as a Strength & Conditioning coach at this university.  What does a strength coach do? I'm so glad you asked!  We do everything from weight training to running, agility, conditioning, plyometrics... everything to help an athlete get better!!  I was there for 8 years and I made some great friends and lasting relationships.  Both my kids were born there too.

Last summer, I applied and got offered a job back here in my hometown.  We up and moved and here we are.

I work at a youth athletic development center.  We work with youth ages 7 up through high school and college. We work on everything from flexibility to running technique, weight training to agility and most of all... self-confidence.  We really incoporate character development into our daily training as well and that is what parents love most about our program.  We also have adult conditioning classes and I just started a toddler class (Me & My Mommy).  It's an interactive fitness class for mom and toddler!

I love what I do.  I know I complained last week about my hours and being away from family, but it is so rewarding.  In fact, I just asked my husband the other day what he thought about my new job and my attitude change from my old job.  "Totally different," he said.

You see, at my old job, there were some frustrations and banging-of-the-head-on-the-wall. I kept my eye open for jobs for 3 years and in fact, almost had one at a very prominent university (ahem, Notre Dame), but things fell through. So, I took that as a sign from God that it wasn't for me.

When I found out about this job (and oh boy... that story is a story in itself!), I thought I'd give it a shot.  God guided me throughout the situation and I am so glad.  My job now involves more marketing and recruiting and getting parents and kids into our program, but when I'm teaching these kids... it's so rewarding.  There is no better feeling than having a parent come to you and say, "I can't believe how active my kid is now. I can't believe how confident he is now. He's trying out for football, can you believe it?"

The relationships you develop with these kids (and their parents) is so wonderful.  I imagine that this is what teachers feel like.  In my new Me & My Mommy class, I had a 4 year old come up to me and give me a kiss on the cheek because she had so much fun!  Absolutely priceless.

While I may struggle with juggling work and home life, I can truly say that this job is more than I thought it would be.  My husband notices that I don't complain about work. When he asks me how work was, I usually say, "Long. Tiring.  But good."

How many people can say that about their job?

What about you?  What's your job?

By day: Coffee maker, plant waterer, gopher, switchboard operator.

By night: chef, organizer, laundry maid, helpmeet, writer, blogger.

I totally understand the banging-head-against-wall situation!

Sounds like a fun job, and I'm glad you enjoy it!

I'm a stay at home Mom, and I don't have enough time to list all of my jobs...but I know that if I got paid for them all...I'd be one rich woman.

You already know mine, but what the hey:

25 hours as a graphic designer for local newspaper. (Outside the home)

5 hours maintaining Husband's youth sports websites. (At home)

Ka-billion hours as a mommy to 3 kids ages 12, 9 and 5! (In the house, in the minivan, at the hoops tournaments...and so on...)

I want to come to your Me & My Mommy class! That sounds like so much fun. Your job sounds very rewarding.

You already know what I do, but I am an HR Administrator by day and a Zookeeper by night :-)

I agree. I have a good friend who works part-time (25 hrs a week) even as a mom of 2. She keeps it up because she truly, truly LOVES what she does. Like you said, how many people can really say that.

Thanks for your background, as I am a new reader. May I ask where in the MidWest? I'm from Chicago, and noticed the Notre Dame mention.

I just found your blog, and I love it! By day, I do university public relations. At night, I get to play with my 1-year old and 3-year old. Up until my son was born, I worked part-time, and going back to full-time work has been a sometimes bumpy, rough process. In my neck of the woods, there aren't very many working moms, and I often feel really alone. So glad you have found this!

I am currently head-banging:( I've been at the same place for 10 years. Since I have kids I no longer feel valued since I can be there all hours.

I am lucky enough to feel the same way about my job...I am a Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences teacher!! I get to spend my days with moody tween navigating their way through puberty and 'try' to teach them valuable life skills. I also get to each at the same middle school I went to...and the same one my daughters will go to some day. I taught at another school for 5 years before getting my current position and hated it, but the story of how I got my job is also a testament that God is in control. I often feel guilty about work, but my job is the next best option and I really do love what I do. There is something very rewarding (and terrifying) about knowing that what I am teaching will impact their lives. Keeps me on my toes and I will be able to know ALL of my girls' friends...

Then, I get to come home and spent my entire night with my family! I am blessed!

I am also a new reader...thanks for sharing :)

It was fun to hear about what you do. I'm a Chiropractor by profession but stopped working when I became pregnant nine years ago. Then I became an adjunct profession in the Biology department working about 10 hours a week while a stay-at-home mom. I now run a Beach Body Coaching Business out of my home. I love the money, I love the flexibility and love being able to have a career and still be a stay at home mom. Thanks for asking.

I am a part time RN at a dialysis center - it is a good job - but I do see the same people day in and day out - grumpy, happy and what ever other moods they can come in. Sometimes happy things happen like transplants(be sure you are an organ donor) and sometimes they get their kidney function back(rarely) but most of the time they do the best they can for x amount of years and then die of complications like heart failure - yeah it can be sad, but you focus on the positive and march on.
The rest of the time I raise my babies - 5, 4 and 8 months.

So glad you posted this! Sounds like a great job! After hearing this I would definitely say that I think a lot of your struggle is just the transition and it will get better. It just takes time. c

I'm so glad you wrote this post. I've been looking for another job for about 2 years and sometimes it gets discouraging. I pull myself up, dust self off and find reasons to make my job bearable for the interim. it's encouraging to see you waited 3 years to find the right job and did it with God's help.

I work full time at a toy company and I manage the creative dept that has dwindled to 2 (including myself).
